Driving in Seville

If you are arriving at Seville Airport and planning to hire a car to explore the area during your stay then the motorway connections from the airport into Seville City Centre are very good.
The transport communication links to outlying villages are also on well maintained roads.
On the other hand, driving around Seville City Centre is something quite different and requires you to be very alert and remain patient.
Some of the things you need to watch out for are:
  • pedestrians who cross the road without looking from all directions
  • scooters or motos weaving through the traffic and ignoring any signals
  • drivers who ignore red lights and drive straight on because the road ahead looks clear as far as they can see ...
  • taxis who will cut you up at every opportunity
  • bus only lanes
  • narrow one-way streets, blind curves and intersections
If you are staying in the city centre of Seville and want to rent a car I would recommend hiring the smallest one which will accommodate your needs.
It will be easier to park and navigate through the narrow streets.
Seville has a real problem with double parking and there is always someone who has been blocked in and sounds their horn every 30 seconds until someone turns up to move their offending vehicle.
There is even a custom here to leave your car locked, but in neutral with the brake off so if someone needs to get out from behind you they can nudge your car over until they have enough room to manoeuvre.
Free parking is at a premium because s the free parking next to the river has been taken away and car parks or paid spaces are expensive.
Spain is still one of the cheapest places in the world to hire a car and in Seville's surrounding countryside the roads are generally empty and well maintained.
Driving is on the right and the speed limits are 60 kmh (towns) / 90 kmh (country roads) and 120 kmh (motorways).
Beware that petrol stations in the more rural areas are often closed on Sundays and holidays.
Hire cars should have the fuel type written in Spanish on the filler cap: unleaded is sin plomo and diesel is gasoil.
If you do decide hire a car in Seville then it is worth pre-booking it for collection from Seville Airport.
Not only does this cut down on transfer costs to your holiday destination, but booking in advance saves time when you arrive at the airport and often secures a better deal than leaving it to the last minute.
There are also a number of car hire firms with desks in the airport terminal so you can shop around for the best quote.
If you are travelling with your family and rent one of the cars in the economy range it will invariably save you money by the time you have added up the cost of airport transfers and bus, taxi and train fares for days out.
